day 2470 – sponge cake

the expectation of post covid times is many people will come out of this quarantine with newfound baking and cooking skills  – my mom is no different. she spends her excess time roaming around youtube, searching for new recipes and new things to cook. baking is a dangerous game because there’ll be a lot of unwanted calories available in my house. at this rate, my mom might be able to open her own bakery shop

day 2285 – hotpot season

mom wanted to do hotpot at home tonight since everyone was present for dinner. i think she was indirectly hinting that i’m rarely home and she’s not wrong. normally, i wouldn’t be home so early if it wasn’t for my failing foot that trapped me indoors. lots of food on the table with a full selection of veggies and some meat slices. there’s also no shortage of tofu because i need my daily dose

day 2161 – smoked salmon pinwheel

the best thing about coming home late is still having homemade food by my mom. these smoked salmon tortilla wrapped pinwheels taste is unmatched because it’s made with so much care. no matter what time of the day, my mom will gladly prepare food for me and make sure i don’t starve. i played up a big appetite after returning home from my sports activities and ate all of that

day 2014 – lunar new year meal

lunar new year calls for a family feast that fills my dining table. it was a full on ten course meal that started with a fish corn soup and ended with a sparkling juice. i enjoyed the meal and quality time because we were in the comfort of our own dining room which i much prefer over crowding into fully booked restaurants. its crazy how fast time goes by. here’s hoping the year of the pig will be a good and prosperous one

day 1973 – annual turkey feast

img_20200130_2040291641499793334398794.jpganother year has gone by and it’s time for another tong’s family turkey feast on christmas day. this year features the main event juicy turkey stuffed with fried rice, with baked pork loin, cod and cilantro, baked potato crisps, grilled asparagus and choice of wine pairing. so many dishes on the table we almost ran out of real estate. i didn’t get to taste every dish before i got way too full. everything tasted really good and of course the turkey was my favourite of all. i think it’s safe to say i need to go on a cut after the holiday celebrations

day 1874 – poke master

improvised poke bowl for family dinner limited to the ingredients readily available in the fridge. the main ingredients were salmon sashimi, beets corn, cilantro and some wasabi for the zing. it was really light, refreshing yet flavourful. i think my newfound favourite vegetable to be beets. i’ll try making more funky poke bowls next time and experiment with different ingredients

day 1833 – spot prawns

my parent’s week-long tour of greater vancouver continues with steveston fisherman’s wharf. dinner is served with loads of fresh seafood that my parents brought home from steveston market. my family rarely chooses to eat shellfish for health reasons. for some reason my parents planned out today to be a homecooked seafood fest. i couldn’t turn down the fresh sockeye salmon and delicious spot prawns

day 1608 – family feasting

annual christmas day family feast where my mom serves the most delicious turkey in the world. the meal is delicious as usual but the quality time spent together is more precious with each passing one. i’m forever thankful to be able to spend christmas day with my family each and every year and i don’t want that to change. in the end, they go the distance to give me the best they can in every possible way. in reality, they deserve better than what i can provide them. nothing is worth sacrificing my family in any way: i’ll try my hardest to keep that close to heart as a reminder. christmas, after all, is spending time with your loved ones that will always be there

day 1455 – wisking

after doing plenty of research, i’m going through the do it myself route. handpicked a few recipes that contains ingredients i readily have in my kitchen. i keep putting off picking up protein bars, so might as well roll up my sleeves and wisk some myself. if this turns out well, i might actually have something to eat on friday. it was a pretty simple process, but the washing and cleaning time took as long as making the bars

day 1438 –  renovation complete

img_20200203_1544215004116593968806022.jpgit’s been a physically taxing day even compared to my typical saturday. put my muscles to good use early morning to move the fridge and the wall cabinets. a hectic five hour taekwondo shift of nonstop teaching without a water or washroom break. i felt depleted for the first hockey game and couldn’t get my mind nor my legs in the game. just as i thought i had no more gas in the tank for round two, i pulled through and managed to play some proper hockey. when i got off the ice, i then realized so many body parts are hurting
