day 2217 – nothing left

i’m feeling upset and beat because it’s crunch time and i can’t seem to land anything, not even my basic back tuck. the test is in a matter of days and my x-out feels like it’s fallen apart. it’s not a required board breaking, but i have been yearning to do this and if i was only going to take the fourth dan test once in my life, i better make it be something i’ll remember. i wanted to be proud of what i did and not just do the bare minimum. at this rate, i’m not sure if it’s going to happen

day 2179 – killarney demo team

after long debate, this is the group i brought to walk with the dragon to represent the branch. it is also the first year that killarney students will have their own program separate from the main school. i opted to not wear my uniform to avoid the need to appear on stage. luckily for us, our grandmaster was out of town so we can run this show with a little less stress. it was more of an eye-opener for most as it’s their first time stepping on stage to do any taekwondo demonstration. proud of these kids for having the courage to do so and completing it

day 2117 – vacation swap

picking up my parents from the airport this afternoon while getting ready to pack and swap places with them. right after dropping them off at home, i had to head out to another taekwondo blackbelt test. the only difference is this time i’ll also be taking my own pretest. i never once thought i would be going for another degree. this was a very late decision that he ambushed with so i didn’t receive the study guide until friday night

day 2082 – secret backtuck

it was a gruesome four hour long colour belt test that saw one hundred and fifteen students. my lungs were exhausted after calling out instructions nonstop, but i’m committed to doing a back tuck every time i step in the dojo. i tried to do it while the grandmaster was out of sight lines but because my mental setup isn’t instant, he walked back into the frame in time to see it take place. he reacted in a way i didn’t expect – very surprised and encouraging. i expected warnings from him to avoid high risk moves, but instead he showed interest and excitement in my ability to do acrobatics and even asked to send him the video. i wasn’t happy with that particular flip because i could only muster a tired flip, but the footage is now on his facebook page

day 2074 – killarney class

my weekly saturday ritual is all about teaching at killarney and the new civil war season that just started up again. it was a crazy hectic shift. the first class of the term is always busier, but also had to worry about preparing students for the belt test while teaching with two fewer instructors. i enjoy teaching, for that reason, my work week doesn’t end on friday, and sometimes doesn’t even end on sunday. sometimes i could use a weekend off

day 1922 – scholarship

grandmaster handed out scholarship to a few of us at the annual celebration party. it’s his way of encouraging us to take the next blackbelt test. to be frank, this amount covers only a small portion of the large sum. i’m not sure where i sit with this decision because it doesn’t necessarily change anything for me. there’s many reasons i don’t need it, but also many reasons to just do it. i’ll give it a little more thought over the course of the next month and see what type of commitment it requires

day 1904 – pastimes

one of my long term past time is training for poomsae competitions. though it’s over a year since i stepped on the big stage, i still spend a great deal of time coaching competition. there were times when thought i was done with taekwondo, but every time i try to step away i somehow get pulled back in. the debate is do i still have one last one in me. after my mentor and friends departed, i no longer have as much drive as a competitor to shoulder all the responsibilities

day 1901 – attempt practice

a failed attempt to practice after sunday poomsae training. intended to have some extra practice after all the kids left, but didn’t get much done and ended up going off on some discussions. i think i’m going to try to set some time aside to get some extra practice in for myself; testing to see if i can get myself back into it. in need to set some goals for myself with some deadlines

day 1879 – teaching shifts

two teaching shifts after lots of jamming isn’t ideal. not the best day of teaching at taekwondo having to deal with a number of difficult students. the first hour had a handful of uncooperative students while managing a class of thirty two very beginner class. one kid wouldn’t follow instructions, one wouldn’t stop complaining, and one wouldn’t move and kept crying. i couldn’t attend to at the same time, but i did the best i could out of the gongshow situation. survived the day on two peanut butter toasts and a sore throat

day 1836 – twirls

two weeks of no progress drove me crazy and today i finally see marginal improvement from my last physio appointment. deep down i knew the answer was a no go even think about trying to go flipping. i shouldn’t risk screw up the slightest improvementby by forcing premature attempg. still, i felt like practicing my five forties so found some empty space at the gym and went at it. it’s rusty especially not being able to use my arms properly, but practice is practice
