day 2053 – nerf shenanigans

the championship win was just an excuse to have a squirtle house party. it’s just another reason for the team to get together for a bonder. i skipped the dinner, but arrived just in time for the team shots. it was a fun night that had just about everything. we went from having nerf wars, to jamming with guitars, to playing story games, to some light sparring to some hockey goalie tutorials. the party went real late and i didn’t get home after past 4am. i haven’t had such a late night in a long time, but i’m glad i did

day 2047 – bc open champiosnhip

bringing a big killarney team to compete at bc open this year. my students made me proud today bringing home six golds, four silvers and two bronze. i try my best to stay out of all the unnecessary drama, but somehow they either drag me in or bring the drama to me. the best way to make a statement is to let my students do the talking. the goal is to continur to grow the competition team. there’s a few rising stars in the bunch so i hopefully i can cultivate them into future national competitors

day 1753 – korean consulate

if i didn’t give some random reason, my shift would have been way longer than the eight to six i had. the competition was unorganized from the beginning when they failed to setup the ticket table. it was so draining, i mainly had pockys and chocopies for lunch. nonetheless, it went well for most of my students. i’m very pleased with the hard work they put into this competition and making the improvements they did. stepping out onto the mats for the first time is daunting, i know far too well. seeing all my students improve makes itch to get back into competition myself, but somehow i held my ground

day 1291 – official rings

img_20200204_1704361027223795845889168.jpgbeing slotted to judge the official blackbelt poomsae ring is what i wanted, but i wasn’t prepared to officiate the blackbelt sparring ring. needing to rotate as centre referee and corner judges in that ring is very nerve wrecking. judging and scoring for hours makes my eyes very tired and shoulders very stiff. it’s a surprise when the president of taekwondo bc came over to chat with me, knows me by my name and said he’s happy to field any questions i may have

day 1203 – world juniors

image

the best of the juniors started pouring into burnaby a few days ago and will be here this week for the biggest event in vancouver since olympic 2010. the rink i usually play hockey in is now converted into four hexagonal rings. the accreditation centre and training centre was full of big shots and young stars. never knew i could shake hands with or talk to so many masters in one day

day 1186 – bonding time

image

our day off before the rest of the team arrives tonight for part two of competition. no events for the team today but still went to catch some sparring action and ran into cosplay expo. a little last minute preparation and team meeting to end the night so we can sleep early in anticipation that we would have none the next night. it’ll be a long day with a full day of competition and driving back immediately after everyone’s events are over

day 1185 – woodburn night

image

another early morning to check into the convention centre by 7am. both poomsae and sparring divisions had some high calibre athletes. after a full morning being at the competition, we went for an early italian dinner before hitting up woodburn. it was time to relax and do some shopping at the outlet, but the many sales made me quite anxious. there’s so much i want to buy, but i managed not to splurge on all my wants

day 473 – in the ring

image

this sunday is funday at taekwondo. back in the ring in full gear second time in three days, getting my chance to fight during a colour belt test. haven’t fought these matches with colour belts in a long time and wouldn’t mind having more of this. it was fun, felt more relaxed and calm fighting and being in control of these matches and getting extra practice seeing the game in a bigger picture, working on other aspects of my skills and playing a more strategic game

day 458 – master cup

image

it feels different going to master cup as a coach instead of a competitor. i am not done competing yet but i have lost interest in competing at this provincial competition year after year. this is really the time for my team to travel to out of town events and get more exposure rather than competing in the same circle at the same level. having success at this level just isn’t giving us the satisfaction like it used to. this is the only way for us to grow and get to higher ground

day 335 – annual canada day special

image

so much time of june has been put into preparing and coordinating for this taekwondo competition and annual awards on canada day. the long stressful days of rehab, practices, design work and meetings all contributed to my busy and sleep deprived schedule. after countless hours spent preparing the nitty gritty details, the big day has finally arrived. the venue is setup and ready to go as of last night, but not sure if my legs are. hopeful it will run smoothly with as little surprises as possible
