day 2536 – pick up

the past forty eight hours has been bad to say the least. the routine doesn’t stop just because i’m having it rough. i still woke up for my morning apex session and i still went to train in the evening. the apex session was good. i surpassed what was asked – an extra set of snatches, upped the weight in the accessory lifts. today also marks the twenty fifth anniversary my family landed in vancouver. we celebrated with a dimsum lunch which helped me take my mind off the bad things

day 2529 – yellow plates

officially made it to the yellow plates snatch club. although i snatched one hundred pounds at nash back in december, it wasn’t in the apex record books. what was suppose to be a casual snatch wave day turned into matching my personal record. i should’ve had it on the first attempt, but i give up too early and didn’t even bother trying to stand up. it’s one thing to still be able to olympic lift with my fractured finger, but it’s another thing to match the numbers while still feeling good. i think all those garage strength sessions are paying off

day 2525 – statutory lift

rarely do i have anything special on canada day. this year it’s even more boring than any other because of covid and the rainy weather. the highlight of my day was going into apex for a lift. i’m really happy to be trying snatches again and even happier that everything felt manageable. my knee does hurt when i stomp too hard or at lockout, but didn’t hinder me from getting into catching position. june was a really rough month for all things including injuries, lifting, tricking, family and people. i hope to put june behind me and start off july on the right foot

day 2506 – normal lifts

it’s been a while since i could string together complete snatches and clean and jerks that i feel good about. at times i had the pull but not the receiving position, other times i had the jerk but not the clean. today i seemed to have it together better than the past few sessions even though i really lacked the sleep and energy. snatch drills went up to the green plates and pause clean and jerks felt comfortable at fifty kilograms

day 2478 – carcassonne

finishing the week off strong with two good back to back lifting sessions today. unlike last friday’s apex session where i missed more than half my lifts, i had all makes today using the green plates. got home and did a second lift with my flightclub fam. hitting the four big lifts and then some accessories. i was able to attempt sprints on the last two laps which feels like a win for me and my healing knee. chilled on my computer with friends for the rest of the afternoon learning how to play a new board game

day 2450 – shoulder stability

i was off olympic lifting for more than week and i feel i’ve forgotten the tech and timing. private session had me stick with really light weights and concentrate much more on shoulder stability within pain free range. the high volume snatches of triples in power, half and full positions gasses me out real quick. the cleans surprised both coach and i; he let me work up to eighty percent. finished the session off with some heavy back squats and then i was off to my routine sprints. i appreciate just being back on the platform – just me and the barbell

day 2437 – bucket snatch

i was challenged to do the trending bucket snatch or clean and jerk and decided to give it a go because i’m utterly bored and feel the need to entertain myself. i filled the each bucket with about six litres of water. the hardest part was not the weight itself, but dealing with the wobbly pvc pipe. the handle of the bucket also came off as i caught it above my head. i must admit it was a pretty fun challenge. i’m sure my neighbor got a good kick out of watching me from their porch

day 2423 – ramen eggs

it’s definitely weird to be staying in on a saturday afternoon instead of being at the dojo teaching. since there’s no teaching, i went to an apex session after much debate and hesitation due to covid-19. i had a really good session snatching up to forty kilos, clean and jerking fifty kilos and squatted a plate. i’m so happy to be out of the confined space and move my rotting body. i went home for lunch and made my first the six-minute egg. it turned out really well and made my noodles tasted extra delicious

day 2405 – snatchable

seven weeks restricted to working on cleans only, can’t say i wasn’t itching to snatch. i would’ve considered it a successful session just snatching the empty bar without any pain. i was even afraid i forgot how to snatch and need to relearn the technique. the fact that i didn’t rush back into snatching had a noticeable positive impact because i felt really strong and comfortable with every single rep. it felt so good that i got the green light to work all the way to the green plates for easy reps. so whatever i did today far exceeds any expectations I had

day 2342 – evo ankle

i went out to apex for my last workout of the decade and did a bunch of snatch work. the good way to end off the year off strong and be well prepared for more in the new year. i delayed this for long, but i finally went out and got the evo ankle stabilizer physio prescribed. i’m not sure when and how i will be using this. i honestly don’t know if there’s anything that can prevent the motions my ankle can’t take, but everything is worth a shot at this point
