day 2528 – term two

round two of taekwondo classes started today and everything went smoothly. there’s more students returning this term so i’ve divided the group to have two small classes simultaneously. i wasn’t as tired or hungry as past weeks by the end of the shift; maybe having an assistant helped a bit. i also had a physio friend needle me in the quad during my short break which is a bonus

day 2513 – national sushi day

the letdown was real when i had to skip my apex session and tricking class because my knee is in terribly rough shape. the only salvaging factor was my friends coming over for a garage lifting session. wasn’t expecting to do a whole lot without my legs under me, but turns out i untapped new territory benching ninety pounds for five reps without relying on my spot. the sushi for lunch afterwards made me feel a little better even though nothing will really make up for what i have to sacrifice

day 2512 – popliteus strain

i got very little sleep because i was worried that one of my knee ligament is done. thankfully my chiropractor squeezed me in this afternoon. he confirmed there’s good news – the injury narrowly missed my ligaments and had my hamstring and calf not been in good condition, it wouldn’t have been able to protect my ligaments. instead, it’s my popliteus and common peroneal nerve that’s sprained. everything around my left leg is in total shock and guarding all movements. he said i can’t escape the rest and i knew he was right because i couldn’t even straighten out my leg or put weight on it. he sent me home with a bunch of rehab exercises that i’ll have to stay on top of if i want to speed up the recovery

day 2496 – chiro check

good thing i secured a chiropractor appointment now that he’s back in operations. looked forward to getting in and easing my body ailments. i had a list of body parts he needed to check and fix, but i knew very well there wasn’t enough time in one appointment slot. he got a chance to look at my shoulder, knee, hip and back. my body was particularly crunchy so everything cracked with ease as he tried to put things back in alignment. all in all, he’s impressed i held up for over two months because i typically see him much more frequently

day 2451 – skytrain stroll

saturday evening social distancing stroll has become a regular thing when covid is in effect. i’m so glad the weather has been good to us so we could spend time outdoors. i for one would go insane if i was trapped indoors with no activity. we walked one skytrain station and back which turned out to be a lengthy forty five minute walk. we walked at a leisurely pace, but somehow my bad knee was in some discomfort by the end

day 2445 – bugged knee

a bit of a bugger because i was doing well in these isolating days until hyper extending my knee on what should’ve been a basic move. it prompted my leg to go into shock, but i was hopeful sitting out a bit would let me continue to train. it was difficult to train, but i wasn’t ready to throw in the white towel. i changed up with it could handle which was predominantly back handsprings and handstands. learning to work with what i have has been a challenge over the course of this recovery, but something i’m slowly starting to adapt to

day 2264 – scooter ride

just because the sun was still out, we did a spontaneous trip out with scooter rentals. i must admit i was nervous since i’ve never ridden a scotter in my life and haven’t ridden a bike in years. we rode it from the shop in mount pleasant to ubc, taking all the bike routes possible. i stayed pretty safe for the most part with the exception of putting my foot down while trying to stop at top speed. that really did it for my knee and i couldn’t put much weight on it afterwards. it was a really fun experience and this checks off one item off my bucket list. though next time i know to layer up because it got really chilly

day 2011 – wall flip

my flips were feeling strong in class and post class training. my back tucks have been coming back to me and lately i’ve been able to get solid landings on blue mat by myself. i was curious about the wall flips so i asked to learn it to which one of the coach graciously took me through the steps. they were really cool once i started going through the whole motion with a spot. although in the end i hurt my knee on one of the awkward landing, i don’t regret having asked to learn it. since i didn’t know the extent of my injury, i did have to pull out of my hockey game later that night

day 1862 – knee dimple

while on the ground rolling, i can’t help but notice a dimpled spot in my knee. it’s a short work week, but i’ve been more fatigue waking up every morning as the week wears on. what i really need is a vacation or some personal time off away from work. i must be really burnt out from not taking a vacation all year long. continuing the grind no matter what part of the week it is

day 1765 – kp time

decided living off tape to walk normally wasn’t sustainable, so went in to the clinic to fix my neck, knee and ankle. i walked into physio clinic with many things that was either tight or wasn’t feeling right, but walked out with assurance i’ll be able to move properly again. crazy its been twenty years since my physio opened this clinic and even crazier thinking what i would have done the past fourteen years if it weren’t for him. i hope he never retires so i can continue to ham with everything i do and everything i want to do
