day 2367 – rude encounter

first day of the year of the rat was a hectic one at taekwondo. having been an instructor for the past decade, i’ve always kept my composure and stayed collected no matter how unreasonable the situation. today, parents of two separate occasion were so rude that i didn’t even bother holding back my words. my branch welcomes anyone, of any age or circumstance, as long as they have the willingness to learn and try. no one disrespects me, my branch or the art of taekwondo deserves to stay. i’m not about quantity of students but more so the quality. the branch i run doesn’t sell blackbelts; one must earn it through diligence of hardwork

day 2304 – lesson plan

ever so busy getting students ready for tomorrow. i have about two dozen students taking this month’s promotion test. since it’s the last test of the calendar year, i’m cramming a few more who’s well overdue. i think as an instructor, i’m more concerned and nervous than the students who’s taking the test. i worked them all pretty hard today, keeping all after class longer than usual. hopefully their hard work pays off at the test

say 2255 – extra trainings

staying extra late for extra training. only at the end did it occur to me that i didn’t even get a sip of water throughout the entire seven and a half hour shift. some kids are really a handful, but i’ll have to learn to deal with it so my assistants don’t get exposed. glad i got a chance to catch up with two of the originals of wu’s the held the reign with me. had some good talks and nostalgic moments

day 2222 – fourth bound

after a full day at the dojo, i walked away with a fourth dan certificate. though i was satisfied with most, i was unhappy about one thing. i was bitter my x-out didn’t get the three attempts that all breakings get because he was worried i’d hurt myself. if held firmly, i was confident in breaking it. i’m still pretty proud i went for it considering the roller coaster i had been on the past few weeks. it was a good attempt and maybe the best attempt i had with boards. i’ll keep practicing and do it better one of these days for redemption. i’m just relieved this is all over. my beaten body full of gashes and bruises deserves the break after two long days at the dojo and of course all the work i’ve put into my x-out. definitely a smart decision to take tuesday as a flex day

day 2221 – dojo obliged

wasn’t too thrilled on working this quarter’s blackbelt test being well aware that i’ll be a long one. the test didn’t finish until 9:45pm and i walked out with many more cuts, scrapes and bruises from holding for all the board breaking misses. still, i headed to open gym without food because i said i would be there. i did some x-outs and reviewed some poomsaes before i called it a day. i couldn’t join the gang for late night food because i’ll need the energy for a full day ahead of me. this can’t be over soon enough; my soul needs a break

day 2082 – secret backtuck

it was a gruesome four hour long colour belt test that saw one hundred and fifteen students. my lungs were exhausted after calling out instructions nonstop, but i’m committed to doing a back tuck every time i step in the dojo. i tried to do it while the grandmaster was out of sight lines but because my mental setup isn’t instant, he walked back into the frame in time to see it take place. he reacted in a way i didn’t expect – very surprised and encouraging. i expected warnings from him to avoid high risk moves, but instead he showed interest and excitement in my ability to do acrobatics and even asked to send him the video. i wasn’t happy with that particular flip because i could only muster a tired flip, but the footage is now on his facebook page

day 1991 – killarney rings

another term of killarney started today. like any start of a new term, the first day is always busy tending to new students and registrations. i sit in the empty dojo after everyone filed out and reflected on the day. i’m happy that the enrolment has grown this term; the number of registrants across saturday class is more than any previous terms since my instructor days began. i’m very happy that my taekwondo class has reached more people than ever before and looking to continue growing this sport and business as a whole
