day 1936 – lamma island

meeting up with another long time friend and teammate for a day trip to lamma island. it’s my first time on this island so we decided to do a hike and eat a lot of fresh seafood. it was a hot day so i couldn’t keep my long sleeve on as much as i wanted to protect myself from mosquitoes. after lamma island, we took the ferry back and hit up tsimshatsui. that wasn’t a very wise choice because it’s one of the most crowded places on a weekend evening. i must mention part of the reason is hit up via tokyo for some matcha ice cream

day 1934 – hotel gym

i’m pleasantly surprised as i walked into my hotel gym to see a squat rack and bench rack. i immediately claimed the squat rack because i was afraid someone else would steal it from me. despite the ghetto equipment, the gym was very well equipped with the exception of lack of stretching mats and space. i had a leg day, not that hong kong isn’t already full of cardio from all the walking. it’s funny i’ve been lifting for over five years and could close my eyes and know the weights in imperial, but had much trouble converting the plates in kilograms

day 1751 – ultimate sub

it’s been a few years since a last played ultimate, but here i am subbing a double header. so much running and cardio involved in this sport; reminds me why it’s not my top pick. by the end of the two games, i had taken over seven thousand steps. i guess i wasn’t as tired as i would’ve been if it wasn’t for all that sunrun training. it took half the first game to get my lingo back and after i settled in, it turns out to be lots of fun

sun run v3. 0

img_20200130_2203344295322358481492748.jpgthe sun run did not come stress-free nor pain-free. when i registered, i was in it to get my personal best time. prior to beginning any training, i wanted a finish in the fifties. as the months passed by, my confidence wavered, but i was still hoping for a sub sixty finish. as the final week rolled around, i knew i was in trouble. my knee cap was busted after taking a diving stab at the ball during handball, and i couldn’t walk without it being taped. i probably shouldn’t even be participating in the race; wasn’t sure if i could cover ten kilometre, let alone run it. when it’s all said and done, my third sun run was in the books. considering that made me sit out all week in hopes to preserve everything i had left in that knee, i did more than survive. it was more than a challenging character building for myself, not only because cardio had always been my weak point, but also for the condition i had to deal with. no, i didn’t make my sub sixty goal, and i’m not disappointed. i could’ve easily taken the easy route and backed out, i could have walked it, but i chose neither. my hour and three minutes finish was good for second in the company team. i kept up a good pace and ran continuously for the first five kilometres before any short stints of walking. at the end i still had some left in the tank to sprint through the finish line. i was tired, but felt susprisely good post ten kilometres. once again it’s proof about my character; if i set my mind to something, i won’t give up easily or back down from any challenges. i’m grateful for those who ran alongside me, who chose to give me words of encouragement even when i looked a little down and out. now that it’s all said and done, i will visit my physio to fix my knee before i decided on what challenges to take on next

day 1726 – sun run fun

it was a gutsy decision to continue with the run, but i’m stubborn that way. i’m glad i put my third sun run in the books with my best run time yet. the near one hour mark was good for second with my company, only to be ousted by a forty-two minute avid runner. couldn’t have asked for a better weather as it was perfect when i began to rack up my steps. running with someone makes me stay motivated to continue pushing forward. no recovery time allowed since i had to work a belt test hours later covering the ten kilometres. now it’s time to hit up my physio so he can fix my knees and get it back to being functional

day 1716 – interval runs

was occupied with meetings after meetings all day and even had to cancel tutor cause i was going overtime. i did, however, make it to the gym and ran until i was dripping sweat. it was a hard run and i definitely pushed it to the max but it’s the last of interval running before sun run day. until then, i’ll be tapering off and doing short ones here and there. then i realized that means no squatting or leg work for the next week either. that got me a little sad. i tell myself i have to temporarily put my weights on hold for a better sun run

day 1698 – rainy run

my first real long run in three years and quite possibly my first ever run in the rain. nailed the sunrun distance like i set out to do and pleased with the result. my legs were spent from the ten kilometre run, followed by five hour taekwondo shift and then some hockey. i could barely move halfway through the day and expect it to get worse tomorrow. i guess i didn’t exactly think it through before committing to all in one day, but that’s kind of how i roll. in the meantime, there’s lot of rolling to be done

day 1696 – treading

img_20200130_2303583260435757429313083.jpgoriginally feeling pretty crummy after a day of work and taekwondo combo, and really didn’t feel like going to do any running. the perfect sign of gym rat when you autonomously drive and end up at the gym. since i was already there i might as well give it my best shot at completing today’s pre-planned workout. as i was running, i was confused why i even wanted to do this in the first place. i felt a weird appreciation for myself for having made it through the duration even when i did not want to. the size of the task wasn’t the focal point, but the fact i took on something that was challenging to me. i left the gym all smiles, but for sure feeling much better than i walked in

day 1666 – green apple

setting aside some time to do my run training since the sun run is only two months out. my lungs were clearly not used to all this cardio, i don’t know how people run the marathons or do ironman. though it’s sunny, the subzero temperature and icy ground doesn’t make it sense to be running outside. on my way to the gym i spotted a green apple mercedes on the road

huffs and bluffs

i can finally check off the top item on my hike wishlist after completing the eagle bluffs. year after year, we go on hikes together and i’m very appreciative we can continue to keep the tradition every summer. we started at the base with a group that deemed themselves as experienced hikers that’s been going all summer long. we humbly said this was our first one of the summer, and that’s no lie. not long into the hike, we left them in the dust. along the way up we stopped at a cabin lake where many people took a dip. at the very top of it all was a beautiful vantage point where we stopped to take photos, eat snacks and rest. just as we were getting up for our return trip, we saw the same group of hikers who dumbfoundedly realized they were massively lapped. we’re not experienced hikers, but we’re speedy; took us roughly four hours to complete the round trip. i still go many hikes on my wishlist and hoping i can cross off a few more next summer
