day 2213 – term ends

i survived one of the busiest summer term in my years at killarney. taekwondo in general has taken a toll on me and given me a lot of pressure. past few weeks has been nothing but preparing my students for both the colour belt test and blackbelt test which takes place tomorrow and next sunday. i poured my heart and soul in preparing them, hoping that they can perform at their best. their test aside, i’m also thinking about a more daunting task and milestone for myself. a milestone that i do not feel prepared for because of the lack of guidance from the grandmaster. i know that i’ll have to gear down because the last thing i want is to disappoint

day 1922 – scholarship

grandmaster handed out scholarship to a few of us at the annual celebration party. it’s his way of encouraging us to take the next blackbelt test. to be frank, this amount covers only a small portion of the large sum. i’m not sure where i sit with this decision because it doesn’t necessarily change anything for me. there’s many reasons i don’t need it, but also many reasons to just do it. i’ll give it a little more thought over the course of the next month and see what type of commitment it requires

day 1172 – referee debut

image

going to master cup with with the identity of a referee instead of a competitor or coach. first time officiating provincial sparring matches and official blackbelt poomsae divisions; definitely an eye opener. crazy long day with ten straight hours of taekwondo today. i definitely enjoyed judging the official blackbelt as opposed to being centre referee for sparring. i needed tying tie tutorials first thing in the morning as i haven’t worn a tie since hong kong elementary school days

day 1087 – uniform frenzy

image

tidying up my closet and realized my uniforms take up a chunk of my closet space. over the years, i have amassed nine uniforms: seven black collared, one poomsae competition, one blue demo and one colour belt white collared. if i hadn’t placed them all side by side, i would have never known there could be so many shades of white. some are more commonly used and some are more significant than others, but they all i like them all

day 1005 – korean belt

image

received my all korean mooto belt that i have been eyeing as my birthday present. the only condition is i have to keep up with the training up to and including nationals. i admit i have more belts than i need, but they’re all different and special in their own ways. this one will be highly prized and maintained mainly for competition purposes. it’s one of those things that needs to be kept in pristine condition and only worn at special events. i wonder how many i have left in me

day 981 – news worthy

image

it’s a pleasant surprise our results made it onto the local newspaper. so proud of my students and their achievements. this justifies that all the time i invested in them while trying to train myself simultaneously was worth the stress. they all practiced very hard for this event and i’ve watched each and every one of them improve before my eyes. it’s a great reminder for myself as to why i love coaching and why i am still involved in taekwondo. i hope they continue to work hard so i can eventually coach them to the national stage during my time

day 970 – kukkiwon validated

image

this is an expensive paper that is proof that kukkiwon has another holder of taekwondo third dan status. it’s definitely a distinction i can be proud of because it’s an achievement i can safely say i worked hard for. it certainly wasn’t an ambition i thought i would ever attain in my lifetime when i first began my taekwondo journey. and one that had ample of obstacles along the way, but found a way to knock them down one by one. i waited ever so patiently for this certificate and card to arrive, and it couldn’t have been anymore timely. i needed my kukkiwon card really badly otherwise going to this year’s nationals would be an issue
