day 2047 – bc open champiosnhip

bringing a big killarney team to compete at bc open this year. my students made me proud today bringing home six golds, four silvers and two bronze. i try my best to stay out of all the unnecessary drama, but somehow they either drag me in or bring the drama to me. the best way to make a statement is to let my students do the talking. the goal is to continur to grow the competition team. there’s a few rising stars in the bunch so i hopefully i can cultivate them into future national competitors

day 1834 – kukkiwon demo

kukkiwon national team visits vancouver again third year in a row. on one hand i’m stoked to watch their demonstration expecting nothing less of spectacular. on the other hand i’m disappointed i won’t be able to participate in their training because my shoulder is still failing me like no other. it hurts not being able to take on this rare training, but i had to be present to satisfy the requirement of being there for my students. either way, the koreans made it spectacular with their spin kicks, multiple kicks and apple breaking

day 1291 – official rings

being slotted to judge the official blackbelt poomsae ring is what i wanted, but i wasn’t prepared to officiate the blackbelt sparring ring. needing to rotate as centre referee and corner judges in that ring is very nerve wrecking. judging and scoring for hours makes my eyes very tired and shoulders very stiff. it’s a surprise when the president of taekwondo bc came over to chat with me, knows me by my name and said he’s happy to field any questions i may have

day 1200 – pirate night

image
vdl goes pirate for this season’s pubnight. i’ve stayed away from spiked drinks for much of the year, but pubnight is usually the only time i allow myself to drink some. taking a few shots early on with the team and then marcom department. i was definitely feeling over the top for a while, but had to sober up quickly to continue some exec duties. i was skeptical about going before, but luckily didn’t miss this season’s main event. i thought i could brush it off the downer feeling, but once again, i’m reminded that priorities are not set equal

day 1172 – referee debut

going to master cup with with the identity of a referee instead of a competitor or coach. first time officiating provincial sparring matches and official blackbelt poomsae divisions; definitely an eye opener. crazy long day with ten straight hours of taekwondo today. i definitely enjoyed judging the official blackbelt as opposed to being centre referee for sparring. i needed tying tie tutorials first thing in the morning as i haven’t worn a tie since hong kong elementary school days
