day 2487 – lights out

wrapped up a long training session that was just shy of four hours. it was a gratifying session where most things i practiced felt pretty good and i broke past some small barriers. started off with some basic front tuck drills and loading my cartwheel. eventually was allowed to take it blue mat and had better take offs and higher landings. my back tucks felt strong leaving the ground and landing higher. my back handspring is at a point where i can do two warm-ups and take it to floor. definitely felt more comfortable connecting my cartwheel back handspring and need not to cover up the edge. the one thing i wasn’t too happy with was my webster because it still feels so broken

day 2415 – phone spam

waited well after class until all other classes and students dissipated so we could have some space and equipment to work with. during the wait, we had fun trying out the vlogger life by spamming photos and videos on someone’s unattended phone. sadly neither my back tuck nor any of my kicks felt good today. i did get a chance at the very end to work on my webster and aerial takeoff. i’m still ashamed i don’t get it and i can’t tell if i’m making progress with it

day 2406 – back flip story

training after class as usual and then coach tempted me with an impromptu back flip on hard surface. i didn’t think twice before agreeing to throw one to go on his story. back flips hasn’t been my focus the recent months so i was surprised this one was better than all the ones i threw on my europe trip. i really would like to throw more of them on hard surfaces, on command. i also wish i could level up on new tricks which is why i’ve been working so hard on flash, webster and raiz

day 2392 – airtracking

getting comfortable with tumbling on the airtrack is a good sign. steadily improving on the connection some sort of backward variation out of a cartwheel. right now it’s looking a lot like backtuck, but the goal is both a flash kick and a back handspring as well. i think a different setup onto a matted floor surface may better utilize the airtrack. i’m pushing for it and looking forward to the day i can comfortably do it on the floor

day 2388 – killarney session

no taekwondo at killarney but a group of my students had their first session of tricking. most of the session was spent mainly working on front tuck and back tuck. they all did very well listening and learning new things. looks like they all enjoyed jumping around and doing the drills. i wanted to be in action as well, but my ankle wasn’t feeling too good last two days so i stayed back a bit. i did demonstrate one back tuck at the end which was pretty satisfying too

day 2364 – phone hijacked

whipped out my phone to film how my current back tucks look like. i left my phone for a bit and so many of these photos appeared in my album. my back tucks are looking more ‘complete’; it certainly evolved a lot since the first ones. the confidence and consistency has improved tremendously and the landing is a slightly softer and more controlled. i’m still working on my set to get more height in this flip so i can have an even softer landing which would be easier on my ankles

day 2346 – plex

had second thought about continuing with the adventure plex plan because my ankle flared up after hockey last night. the ganglion-like lump appeared again even though nothing particular happened during the game. on top of front tucks, i can now do back tucks and back handsprings on the trampoline and airtrack. hopefully next time i come back i’ll also be able to do front handsprings, websters and flash kicks

day 2314 – tucking it

feeling gutsy and antsy with the flips and couldn’t hold myself down any longer. it’s hard to describe the feeling i had when i realize even after all that happened to me, i just did a back tuck by myself. sure, the technique is not as good as my prime days, but at least i can still do them unspotted. best of all, i didn’t experience any pain in my ankles. i think i still want to to train through my ankle woes, but train smart so i’m still able to condition it regardless if i go under the knife or not

day 2256 – open gyming

open gym sundays because i can afford to stay up late since i don’t have work the next day. i did some back tuck maintenance work before drilling some back handsprings and websters. when the back handsprings started falling apart, i switched over to finish the session with pop360 and kip ups. a quieter night at open gym just the way i like it. i like that there’s a lot of open space to work with

day 2220 – outside masters

keeping up with practice at masters class on one of my infrequent saturday off. i’m even more taped up than usual after getting a scrape across my instep yesterday, but that’s never stopped me from anything in the past. i’m glad i went because i got more pointers on how to refine my back tuck and x-outs. the bonus was getting to try them with shoes and then some x-out attempts on grass, both spotted and unspotted. i wouldn’t say i’m comfortable with it by all means, but the fear is slowly shrinking. it’s a pretty good way to end the month of august
