day 2220 – outside masters

keeping up with practice at masters class on one of my infrequent saturday off. i’m even more taped up than usual after getting a scrape across my instep yesterday, but that’s never stopped me from anything in the past. i’m glad i went because i got more pointers on how to refine my back tuck and x-outs. the bonus was getting to try them with shoes and then some x-out attempts on grass, both spotted and unspotted. i wouldn’t say i’m comfortable with it by all means, but the fear is slowly shrinking. it’s a pretty good way to end the month of august

day 2219 – x-out breaking

with crunch time in mind, i had to work my way through some back tuck troubles before i can think of anything else. after getting the consistency down, x-outs were back in the discussion. had a few good attempts with foam targets and acetate sheets; thought that was good enough progress from training. i wasn’t thinking of going for boards today, but it only happened because of them giving me the extra push. honestly if i hadn’t progressed to to boards either today or tomorrow, i would definitely call off the x-out breaking option

day 2218 – hong kong chaos

a little throwback to last fall’s trip with my parents to hong kong and singapore. some days i can’t help but think about my relatives back home and pray that they’re okay in the midst of the chaos. good thing none of my relatives and friends are activists in all these rioting events. my parents would like to go back to visit family, but definitely have no interest in these conditions

day 2217 – nothing left

i’m feeling upset and beat because it’s crunch time and i can’t seem to land anything, not even my basic back tuck. the test is in a matter of days and my x-out feels like it’s fallen apart. it’s not a required board breaking, but i have been yearning to do this and if i was only going to take the fourth dan test once in my life, i better make it be something i’ll remember. i wanted to be proud of what i did and not just do the bare minimum. at this rate, i’m not sure if it’s going to happen

day 2216 – paused snatch complex

looking down at apex from the new warmup and stretching area. i went into the gym ready to do my third week of passed snatch complex, hoping to reach beyond green plates i couldn’t make last week. coach changed it up on me. instead of doing six times, he cut it down to three before going for singles. to my amazement, i beat my personal best by one kilogram which takes me up to forty three kilograms. i made two more attempts at forty four and almost made that if i hadn’t over-corrected it. either way, i’m happy with the new pr knowing i’m only two kilograms shy of the yellow plates. at the end of the workout, i didn’t think twice and just went for the back flip when asked to do one. this would be my first back flip on solid hard ground

day 2215 – sidekick break

did a high sidekick breaking just for fun. not bad for someone who hardly stretches and doesn’t put in the time to practice breaking anymore. probably haven’t kicked a board for real since my last test over four years ago. i need to do some last minute cramming for the boards that i’m about to break in a matter of days. i’m pressing for that x-out and hoping it is ready by then. aside from stick-knife and stick-stick self defense, i should probably review and shake off the rust for all the step sparring, self defense and poomsae

day 2214 – three musketeers

the killarney three musketeers made me a proud instructor today. they’ve grown into fine red-black belts. aside from these three, a lot of my students performed well and earned their stripes. they all worked very hard to pass my stage gate before they were allowed to test. first time i was given the pen to hand out promotion test marks. the grandmaster has spoken and basically informed me the date of my test – it’s coming up a lot sooner than i expected. i would’ve appreciated a longer notice. the pressure is on and i’m really starting to worry about my chosen breaking
